IND780xx Harsh IP Protection

Product Notice

As a leading supplier for industrial measurement equipment METTLER TOLEDO is committed to continuously pushing innovation while delivering quality and compliance.

During a risk review it has come to our attention that the enclosure of IND780xx Harsh models manufactured in 2022 and 2023 and installed in certain hazardous location installations might not meet the IP6x and IPx4 protections as defined in applicable standards.

Affected Products

  • IND780xx Harsh, installed in hazardous area.

Although METTLER TOLEDO has deemed the risks of an incident occurring to be low, because of the hazardous location environment, if an incident were to occur it could result in personal injury or death. At METTLER TOLEDO we are committed to high compliance standards and want to ensure safety at work of our customers. Out of an abundance of caution METTLER TOLEDO will offer to replace IND780xx harsh hazardous area terminals with a manufacturing date of 2022 or 2023.

  • These terminals have a standard data label marked with a FACT. NO. (factory number) starting in 78J and ending in either Y96 for Div 2 or Z97 for ATEX/IECEx.
  • Markings for S/N (serial number) will begin with C2 for 2022 and C3 for 2023.

ATEX/IECEx USERS: IND780xx Harsh installations in Conductive or Carbonaceous Dust Environments
The IND780xx Harsh ATEX/IECEx version is intended to be used in areas of pollution degree 2 or lower as outlined in section 3.5 of the IND780 D2, Z2/22 Installation Guide. The classifications as IIIC (conductive dusts) and IIB (applied to carbonaceous dusts) are restricted by the special conditions outlined in the product documentation, and pollution degree 2 does not allow the installation of IND780xx in Zone 22 areas with conductive or carbonaceous dusts. Conductive dusts include but are not restricted to copper, aluminum and iron dusts. Carbonaceous dusts include but are not restricted to coal, barbon black, charcoal and coke dusts.

  • ATTENTION: If you are using IND780xx harsh terminals in Zone 22 with conductive or carbonaceous dusts, please stop using it. In case of any questions, please contact METTLER TOLEDO via the provided link.

DIV 2 USERS: IND780xx Harsh DIV 2 installations in carbonaceous dust environments IND780xx Harsh Div 2 installations are not allowed in areas with metal dusts (Group E). However, Group F (carbonaceous dusts) are allowed as outlined in the installation guidelines and product certification. Carbonaceous dusts include but are not restricted to, coal, carbon black, charcoal, coke dusts. Carbonaceous dusts are semi-conductive and require a higher voltage and/or temperature for ignition compared to metal dusts of Group E.

  • ATTENTION: Based on our risk assessment we believe that applications under normal conditions with carbonaceous dust have very low risk even if the IP6x rating is compromised. However, out of an abundance of caution, please contact METTLER TOLEDO via the provided link for replacement.

ATEX/IECEx and Div 2 with hazardous gas and potential ingress of liquids into the terminal
If your application is in a hazardous area with gas in Div 2 or in the ATEX Zone 2 area and you clean the terminal with liquids such as water, liquid ingress into the terminal has a potential to cause a short in the electronics creating a spark.

  • ATTENTION: Based on our risk assessment we believe that applications under normal conditions have a low risk even if the IPx4 rating is compromised. However, out of an abundance of caution, please contact METTLER TOLEDO via the provided link for replacement.

ATEX/IECEx and DIV 2 in areas with applications not mentioned above
