The role of PAT differs drastically when it is used for development, scale-up or production purposes. With such changing roles, changes in the number of techniques and frequency of use are also observed. In this talk, these differences are described, and examples are shown for each of the roles. The talk then focusses on lab-to-plant scale-up. How can PAT be used to verify or deny a correct scale-up and, in the latter case, help in finding out why the scale-up was not successful. The fingerprint concept is explained, as well as recent advances on how to bring PAT data from the lab into the plant to allow for a Live verification and data analysis during batch scale-up.

About the Presenter

Jan Dijkmans, Ph.D.

Jan obtained his Master's degree in Bioscience Engineering from the University of Leuven, Belgium. He then joined the group of Professor Bert Sels where he developed heterogeneous catalysts for Biomass conversion to chemicals, focusing on incorporation of Sn into zeolite structures. He received his Ph.D. in Bioscience Engineering in 2015. After a one-year post-doc project collaborating with Total Petrochemicals, Jan joined Janssen Pharmaceuticals (Johnson & Johnson). In his role as Process Engineer, he develops robust processes, using a combination of data-rich experimentation, modelling, data analysis and technology. He is the department's PAT subject matter expert. In this role, he supports colleagues when performing or analyzing PAT experiments and improves the implementation of the technologies during development and scale-up of processes.
